SCA Foundation Research Grants

Grants Awarded

Three types of grants will be awarded in 2017:

  • SCA/IARS Starter Grant – up to $25,000 a year for two years.
  • SCA/IARS Mid-Career Grant – up to $50,000 a year for two years.

Applications will be accepting beginning in November 2016. Notifications will be sent when the grant submission site is open.

Applications will close on February 13, 2017. The awards will be announced at the 2017 SCA Annual Meeting & Workshops. The grant period of 12 to 24 months can begin any time from July 1 to December 31 of the year granted.

Eligibility & Application Format

  1. Member, Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists at the time of application.
  2. MD or PhD degree.
  3. Primary Investigators (PI) on active NIH grants or other (inter)national peer-reviewed grants with > $50,000 per year are not eligible.
  4. Starter Grants: PI must be within five years of finishing training and have an academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, or less. Previous Starter Grant recipients are only eligible for Mid-Career Grants.
  5. Mid-Career Grants: PI must be at the level of Associate Professor or less; previous Mid-Career Grant recipients are not eligible for additional awards.
  6. Grants will be judged relative to peers in the grant category submitted.
  7. Eligible research projects should be completed within three years after the award of the grant.

Administrative Requirements

Submitted directly via the website:

  1. Title Page (fill-in page)
    1. Type of grant category.
    2. Title of research grant.
    3. Proposed starting date.
    4. Name of applicant, academic degrees, faculty rank.
    5. Sponsoring institution in which research will be performed.
    6. Name, address, and telephone number of responsible department chief and of the responsible financial officer of the sponsoring institution.
  2. Acknowledgement of Other Requirements
    1. It is understood that if awarded the grant, a progress report will be due to the SCA (addressed to the SCA Research Committee Chair) by June 10 of the following year in order to obtain the second funding installment.
    2. It is understood that a final report will be due to the SCA (addressed to the SCA Research Committee Chair) by September 30 of the year of completion of the research.
  3. Letters included in the submission should be addressed to:

Uploaded documents:

  1. Curriculum Vitae of the PI (limit 10 pages, NIH Biosketch format preferred).
  2. Curriculum Vitae of the scientific mentor (NIH Biosketch format preferred).
  3. Letter from the department Chair indicating the following:
    1. Assessment of the applicant’s research and other professional accomplishments.
    2. Institutional/departmental matching funds, which may be salary support of personnel (excluding the principal investigator), supplies, animals, equipment, etc.
    3. The availability of suitable facilities and/or patients.
    4. A guarantee that the PI will have at least 40% non-clinical (research) time, should the grant be awarded.
    5. The agreement to return all unused funds if the project is not completed in three years.
  4. Letters of support from all co-investigators.
  5. Starter Grants: a scientific mentor is required. A letter describing the mentor’s role and an outline of a mentoring plan must be submitted in addition to letters from any other co-investigators.
  6. For previously submitted grants, an additional page may be uploaded to respond to previous reviewers.
  7. Budget: The budget should outline all proposed expenditures for the project and indicate the amount and breakdown for specific items requested from the SCA, and the amount and breakdown for specific items provided by the institution as matching funds.
    1. The budget may include salary support for technicians, research nurses, and other research personnel, equipment, and/or supplies. Other costs must be itemized and justified.
    2. Starter Grants: no part of the grant may be used for salary support of the PI, the PI’s mentor, fellows or residents. Travel or tuition expenses are not allowed.
    3. Mid-Career Grants: up to 50% of the budget can be used for salary support of the principal investigator. Funds cannot be used for travel or tuition expenses. Institutions should not request overhead costs as part of the budget.
    4. No part of the grant may be used for patient costs (except to pay for pertinent laboratory costs), consultant costs, alterations, and renovations.

Application Materials to be Uploaded

The main body of the application will be uploaded to the grant submission website as a single PDF document with components collated in the following order:

  1. Cover page listing application title, name of applicant and applicant’s institution, type of grant applied for, mentor’s name for Starter Grants, and the names, academic degrees and faculty ranks of any co-investigators.
  2. Response to reviewers for resubmission, if applicable (2 pages).
  3. Research Plan (see below).
  4. Budget (2 pages).
  5. Budget Justification (1 page). Include a brief description of projected costs for different components of the budget, i.e. supplies, animal costs, equipment, salary support.
  6. Study Approval (1 page). Include a statement of approval for studies involving human or animal subjects by the appropriate institutional committee. (The application may be submitted before approval is obtained, with a letter of explanation. However, no award will be made until notification of institutional approval is received).
  7. Related Studies (1 page). Include a listing of all other studies being performed on the study population, if applicable.
  8. Other Grants (1 page). All active and pending (applied for or received as an investigator or co-investigator) research support for all projects must be detailed. Include a statement of the relationship to the present grant.
  9. Applicant CV (10 page maximum; NIH Biosketch format preferred).

  11. Starter Grants: mentor letter, including a mentoring plan.
  12. Starter Grants: mentor CV (NIH Biosketch format preferred).
  13. Other letters of support

Research Plan

Pages should be double spaced, in 12 pt. font. Sections 1-4 must not exceed 9 total pages; lengths listed below do not include references. Failure to strictly follow formatting instructions for the Research Plan will result in administrative withdrawal of the application. Any figures or tables should be embedded within the PDF document, not included as separate pages.

  1. Synopsis (1 page). A concise summary of the project should be included as a separate page.
  2. Introduction (1-2 pages including figures and/or tables).
    1. Background. The rationale for undertaking the study and what knowledge gaps it might fill, as well as any preliminary data. Significant publications related to the proposal should be cited and briefly outlined.
    2. Hypothesis and specific aims of the research proposal.
  3. Methods/Design (3-5 pages including figures and/or tables).
    1. Indicate the specific techniques, animal species, etc. that will be used.
    2. Explain the types of experiments to be done.
    3. Sample size calculation (power analysis) – list and justify the number of experiments that will be required.
    4. Describe the planned methods for statistical analysis.
    5. Identify potential problems and limitations, and how they will be addressed.
  4. Significance (1 page). Summarize the importance of this research and indicate the potential for further studies and future applications of the derived information.
